This book is much stronger than a college edition dictionary. The annotations on usage and pronunciation make it a joy to read. I have one copy at home and one at the office and use them several times each day.

A gem for the home
This book is not a replacement for the 2nd Edition of the Random House Dictionary of the English Language in that it does not have the foreign language portions. It is however, a worthy reference and contrary to Brooks review is something I use many times a day in my home, much more than the phone book. I have it on a book stand so it is easy to use and it will soon have worn pages as did the book it replaced.

The measure of a good newspaper is accuracy. And after working for several years in the reporting, editing and copy editing areas of small newspapers, I've come to appreciate works like the Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary. Admittedly, a title this big -- more than 2200 pages -- isn't something you use every day at home. But at my newspaper job(s), you live and die by accuracy. A good dictionary is essential; a great one is divine. The real indicator of a book's worth in the workplace is how others use it too, and when I left my last job, I had to explain to several other very disappointed employees that the copy of Webster's they had come to know, use and depend on was mine, and it was leaving when I did (Of course, I did tell them where to buy their own copy). It's an invaluable reference tool for home or office.
